Some years ago, I’ve visited one of the metal shops around here and saw ...And Oceans' strange titled A.M.G.O.D album on budget CD's shelf.I've never heard about the band by that time.But I thought that a label like Century Media can't press a terrible album and decided to give it a chance.That was one of the very good choices of mine so far...
First of all, I'm not against symphonic black metal (I enjoy these Finnish guys' first two symphonic black metal works too) but A.M.G.O.D is a brilliant step in ...And Oceans' progressive music career.You can somewhat call this "Electronic-influenced, futuristic black metal" but it's offering much more to the listener..
The first track "Intelligence Is Sexy" begins with a ultra catchy and strange keyboard melody.Then an industrial guitar tone comes in.After that, suddenly the band turns it's style towards their old times, a raw black metal sound appears..And later in the track, it turns to industrial again.I have to tell, the whole album's full with changes like this.
"White Synthetic Noise" opens with a slow guitar riff and accelerates just seconds after.In the middle of the track, an electronic part takes place.You can hear the disco beats for a while but it doesn't last long.
"Tears Have No Name" was a indispensable song for me for years.The main melody of this song is truly amazing.I would kick at the doors and scream when the rhytm guitar starts to follow the thrilling keyboard tunes.Besides, the lyrics of this song are very emotional surprisingly.You can't except such deep lyrics from this song full of vim.For example:
"The angel of my dream
Carried away to the stars
Hurt by your cruelty
I breath your beauty
Alone in the rain
With tears that have no name"
Great song indeed..
"Esprit De Corps" is another highlight of the album..Very fast and heavy..The screams at the chorus are also awesome: ”Pigs, pigs, pigs..Espirit De Corps"
"Odious&Devious" starts reminding ...And Oceans' early times.The raging black metal sound suddenly turns into electronic stuff.Then another excellent guitar riffs are occuring and finally the song comes to an end.
Only the ending guitar solo on the sixth track called "Of Devilish Tongues" draws my attention there.It's a weak song otherwise.
"Postfuturistika" is another good one.There are some great riffs here.By the way, the band deserves a greeting for creating weird and original song titles like this..
"TBA In A Silver Box" is one of the darkest songs I've ever listened. When I imagine myself standing lonely at the seaside, watching the waves at night while drinking some booze during pouring rain, this song would be the first choice to complete the atmosphere.
Last song of the album "New Model World" is made for just fun, I guess.If a genre like "Dark Techno" would exist, this one would really fit that..
At last, I think A.M.G.O.D had disappointed many of the band's old fans because of the band's electronic and industrial influences after first two albums but the album's "A Must" for all open-minded metalheads...Well worth a listen…
